Experiencing Positive Through the Negative

Like peanut butter and dark chocolate, Jersey and traffic are as common a pairing. Hardly as delicious as the former, the latter sometimes lends itself to getting one’s creative gears going. With the right song and head-space, you can easily find yourself at your destination before you know it!

One song that was recently on the radio was “Every Storm” by Gary Allan. I hadn’t heard it in a while, but had liked it enough before to have downloaded the single years ago. As I listened to it after a while, it got me thinking about the negatives we all sustain in our lives, and how we get through them.

From there, I began to think about negatives from the past, in the present, and those that may occur in the future. However, it wasn’t so much with a depressed viewing, contrary as that sounds; but with an understanding of the positives that can come from each time frame.

Negatives From the Past

As you get old enough, it becomes easier to pinpoint some negative examples from your life as you gain experience. Losing a relative is a common one, and if it’s someone you’re especially close with, a jarring one for sure. You were probably experiencing a lot of bad emotions and devastation during that time, and found it hard to concentrate on much else.

“Every storm runs, runs out of rain” is the beginning of the chorus in the song. Now as hard as the above example was, there does seem to be some truth to that? This, of course, depends on the person and situation, but looking back on those past examples, how do you feel now? Sure, sad, depressed and/or longing could easily describe those emotions; but you’re here, now, after sustaining those negatives. The pain isn’t as raw if you’re far enough removed, and you’re literally experiencing the clear skies from that dark time.

Negatives From the Present

Most people can at least name one, if not multiple, and the hope is –  it’s not that serious and/or common. But as you’re wading through the muck of those examples, is there someone at your side helping you through it? If not, are you finding that you’re able to fight through it on your own? Is it moving you to make better decisions, and/or course correct where need be? If you answer “no” to any of that, consider what the positives behind changing your thinking could do for your present state.

However, if you answer “yes” to any of those questions, then you should hopefully find some positivity through that as well. For example, if you can’t get traction with an artistic endeavour, the hope is you still have people around you to encourage you to keep going. If they’re few and far between, then let the light of your creativity keep burning, if for no other reason than the love of your art. The point is to appreciate the positives behind those at your side that keep you motivated, and or your personal determination to see your project through.

Negatives From the Future

Well, no one wants to think about this but let’s be honest, we all do. Again the variety of ways negatives could manifest in your future are many. I won’t even use one as an example because especially as a positive thinker, I’d be going against the type to really delve into that head-space.

But, don’t mistake positive for naïve, as, trust me, quite a few do! None of us are going to get to the finish line without sweating, an untied shoelace, and/or a shin splint or two. And if that sounds negative that’s because it is; but it also allows you to appreciate the abundance in your life now. If that’s lacking, then changing your outlook and energy could not only benefit you today, but every tomorrow that you’ll have for the rest of your life.

In The End

If nothing else, this should focus your determination to never let the negative win out. You survived your past examples, scarred but still standing. Your present negative status may be bogging you down, but you can and will get through it if you focus enough on the positive energy within you. And the future may yet be explored, but you can prepare for any eventuality as best you can by knowing that the negative will never be permanent… Because it doesn’t have to be.

“So hold your head up and tell yourself that there’s something more, and walk out that door.” That’s another line from the song, and very much represents the theme of this entire article. Have you been able to take the positive from the negative at any time in your life? As wide ranging as they can be and/or potentially devastating, focusing on the best will help you get through the worst.

And whether that door from the song is physical or not, use the negative to learn from, and to leave past and excel. Because the past is gone, present is all around us, and future is yet to be.

How The Universe Reaches Out To You

In learning and exploring philosophies like ‘new thought,’ it’s great to discover how much is already aligned with my belief system. And whether it’s personal or faith based, or just living and experiencing life and people around you; it takes a keen eye but an open heart to really listen to what the universe is telling you.

For any number of reasons my state in life is, well, unique for my age. As a walking contradiction in any number of ways, I truly believe this path is predestined… Especially that I find myself interested in learning from people who have had opposite journeys. This has led me to align my creative side with my curiosities and lack of knowledge; to create some truly unique concepts and stories. To me, this is the universe trying to get an important message across.

All of that is to say, if you can relate, you may have found some difficulty discerning between feeling what you think you should feel versus a genuine message outside yourself. Are you hearing what you want to hear, or are you listening to the universe with an open mind? With that said, I’ve found there are at least three ways the universe reaches out to you through the many layers and shields we have up around us.

1) Signs

Let’s start with the hardest first and work our way downward. When the universe uses signs, it can literally be anything or anyone, and endless in nature. Let’s say it’s related to taking a new job in a new city, maybe Seattle. If all of a sudden you start getting Starbucks coupons in your inbox but you don’t drink coffee, start seeing buildings that remind you of the Space Needle, or notice an inordinate amount of Frasier reruns on TV; you might begin to think there’s a pattern forming.

In my experience, it’s been primarily numbers that have gotten my attention. This is all semi recent, only in the last few years, that I’ve really become aware of them. It’s hard to explain to people within my circle, because they think I’m specifically looking for them. I can’t say they’re wrong, but the overwhelming evidence says I’m not seeking them out.

Examples include being on the treadmill with varied speeds and levels, with my time or distance ending on a specific series of numbers. Looking up at the TV at just the right moment to see lottery numbers that match my numerical signs. When I look at my stop watch at just that moment and/or find myself woken up at the right time… Trust me, there are more examples, but their randomness leaves me smiling more times than not.

I’ve talked with other people that have noticed similar things, receiving something from outside themselves that relates to their journey. One of the ways to measure how genuine they might be is if you’re not actively looking for them. I don’t look for the majority of my examples but, trust me, they still show up anyway!

2) Energy

Wouldn’t it be great if you knew then what you know now? It would have done me well back in my 20’s if I knew my energy and those around me better. However, it’s that regret and not always positive lessons that have taught me what I know now to be true.

So what does it say when things aren’t going great, but you still have that drive to be positive? That you need to clear out the negative. Or just the same; if things are finally where you want them to be in your life, but your energy is on the lower end, that could mean something as well.

The universe could be using your energy as a way to get your attention… To get you to focus on your talents or opportunities, help you help those around you, etc. This is especially true for artists, that find their energy is at its most positive when they’re expressing themselves. It could also be athletics or cooking, where you find yourself at home in your own mind, body and soul… Do what preaches to all three.

And this doesn’t always have to be something earth shattering or life altering; but just absorbing the message genuinely and emitting the same positively. Learning this took me some time regarding writing, even though I’ve been clicking away on a keyboard forever! And I have found that although some concepts are less common; I’ve been able to use that template to explore some unique story lines when it comes to humour and drama.

3) Destiny

The universe got to me on this one when I was about five. Exaggerate much, you say? Sure, I don’t blame you for thinking so, but allow me to elaborate. Big mop of hair before I had glasses, dressed in what was no doubt considered to be contemporary in the late 80’s. Kindergarten was roaring a long when during library time we were told to go and pick out a couple of books to read. I don’t remember how I ended up in the history section or what number book this was that I pulled; but when I saw a picture of the prow of the sunken luxury liner Titanic and saw that word in all caps, consider my young mind captivated.

And it’s not just how I believe I was led to do so in reading that book, but how pivotal a role fate played in everything that made that historical example exist in the first place. Destiny may be the way the universe moves us in certain directions. And even if we don’t comply, somehow we always end up where we were supposed to be.

Clearly this isn’t an exact science and naturally there are plenty of detractors. And where their hearts and/or reasoning may be in the right place, I have yet to find myself convinced that this isn’t a real thing. It’s not exactly tangible, but the concept is proven all the time. How many examples do we have of meeting people that affect us positively and negatively, zigging when we should have zagged, etc?

It’s always been as basic to me as A leading to B leading to C, and so on! Now I can’t always say I’m a huge fan of where it has led me; but still feel that the end result will have made the journey well worth it.

In The End:

There’s no exaggeration when I say, waking up to all this has been exactly easy. Obviously my natural state and approach with this is positive, and I’m grateful for that. However, as much as I love communicating, I don’t always get the message out clearly of what this all means.

Yet, I’m finding that the universe does just that, but that it’s our reception that isn’t always the best. But that shouldn’t be a reflection on the former, but an example of how the latter doesn’t always listen. A quote that seems more than appropriate for this post is: “The universe never asked you to struggle. It is simply answering your mood.”

To me that says, we should stop being our own worst enemies and truly listen and process. This can be done in many ways, and for someone like myself who tends to be active and energetic, I don’t always take my own advice. But in looking at these three aspects alone, it’s a great template to help focus on what you may be missing. And the best energy may come when you truly listen, and you’re able to share that joy. So, in thinking about how the universe may be reaching out to you, what signs have you encountered?

Be The Energy You Want To Attract

There have been times throughout my life when I’ve been asked why I am always in a good mood. I usually smile and first say not to equate being hyper or energetic with being happy. Naturally it got me thinking about the good and the bad in people’s lives, which – depending on your environment – can be harder to fight through the negative than embracing the positive.

One example of the negative is suffering the loss of a loved one; another being that despite having family and friends in my life, I still experience a sense of loneliness sometimes. (The former being an active negative, the latter a passive negative.) Despite these events, I never found myself dipping below the waves of that energy. Even as an adult, where some things are a mystery to me that shouldn’t be; I still find a stubborn buoy of positive energy that just won’t be sunk.

Moreover, recently I’ve realized that at the end of the day, my Standard Operating Energy (SOE) has always been at the positive end of the spectrum. Simply put, I embrace positive energy instead of the opposite, realizing I’m on this path for a reason. And mixed with a curious nature and strong intuition, this has helped me sense other people’s energies as well. So, here I have developed three categories and the types of people that belong to each SOE.

1) Even Keel SOE

Even Keel SOE isn’t necessarily the worst energy out there, but it’s not the best either.  Sometimes life isn’t easy, other times – it’s crazy, but life can be great as well. And through these periods, there are people who whether through the good times or bad, always find themselves in a “meh”* state of mind. Generally they’re not overly emotional, or even averagely emotional, but somewhat closed off. They’re happy to keep their heads down and just go with the flow, even when the situation calls for a more active response.

Now the negative results of this type of SOE could range from that person being an enabler, as they just don’t want to rock the boat. Or when you need a shoulder to cry on, you find that they’re not necessarily equipped to help guide you through the darkness. However there are times when a discerning steady hand is needed; and though these people may not be able to relate to you, they can help calm the waters.

2) Negative SOE

Depending on how perceptive you are, whether they’re miles away or in the office next to yours, you just know that they’re there. So first keep in mind, that they may not even know it consciously. They probably don’t look the part of someone you would think has this prevalent energy coursing through their veins either. However, call it intuition or a sixth sense, you just know deep down – these people thrive on the negative.

Also keep in mind, this isn’t a sinister energy exactly, but one that will gladly counter your own positives if you let it. The numerous ways these people display their SOE is just that, many. We all know people that whether they have good hearts or the opposite, just can’t seem to get out of their own way because of this prevailing energy. You can sometimes help them see the light, if all they see is a wall.

Again this doesn’t mean they’re bad people by any mean. If nothing else, depending on what you know about them, maybe it’s the result of a rough life. However none of us really skate by uninjured; but these people may use their negatives as reasons to never elevate themselves to a higher, more beautiful energy. What’s worse – they may intentionally try to take you down to their level, which can be especially difficult in romantic or other close relationships.

3) Positive SOE

You just like these people, and you don’t know why. Whether you know them well or as an acquaintance, a new neighbour or a coworker, or just a longtime friend or a family member; these people fill your life with light. No worries, they’re not always going to have blue birds singing around their head. They’re also going to have bad days and experiences like anyone else. But it’s how they shake themselves off and keep moving forward, make you feel better for just being around them; and not dwell on the negative that truly helps their energy remain so beautiful, so positive.

These are the people you want to have as friends for life, date, marry and start a family with, or just go to a yoga class or hang out on a Friday night. They’re also not above bad decisions and regrets; because again, who goes through life without at least few? But it’s how they can see the light through the darkness, and just have that internal beauty that makes them truly remarkable and genuine people.

Ironically where this SOE serves you the best, is when things are the worst. When broken down, through any number of ways, you have this fire within you that will never go out. Sure it can dim and flicker, and you’ll need time to heal, but it’s this energy that will help you do just that… It will help you embrace the good and brightness within yourself and others.

People that have this SOE are the ones you want at your back as well. The way they uplift you with just a genuine smile, kind words, make you laugh and make you want to make them laugh, are all affects of being around them. You naturally gravitate toward them and for obvious reasons!

In The End

One measure of this can be how you wake up in the morning. It’s not so much a matter of how tired you are or what you did the night before, how you slept, or what you have going on during the day. It’s not even so much of a mood, but a sense of your true energy, if you know where and how to look for it.

Are we all born with a SOE? Or is our energy imprinted on us by the people around us? Much like the nature nurture argument, the truth may be somewhere in between. And by no means are these energies static throughout our lives either, sometimes even crisscrossing with each other.

As a writer, I’m attracted to thoughtful quotes, and just love the ones that are anonymous; as I have to wonder how they can be anonymous, as someone had to say it somewhere! And the one that I love is by an unknown author that reads similar to a Gandhi quote; “Be the energy you want to attract.”

Simple and effective, and a reminder that you don’t have to be stuck in the first or second SOE. Depending on how much of an incline the battle uphill is, it might be tough; but the journey to a Positive Standard Operating Energy can’t be ignored… And if nothing else, can be all the more reason to embrace it everyday and night.

Destiny’s Energy: Where Does It Guide Us?

You sometimes have to really think about how nuanced and complicated the human condition is, and how destiny guides us whether we recognize it or not. We are capable of such an amazing beauty and wonder; sadly it is in a world that does not always embrace the positive energy we all have within us.

Because we’re imperfect beings coexisting together, none of us really get that far before we encounter negative energies. This happens in a number of ways and scenarios. As someone who is an eternal optimist, even when the negative is on my radar; four patterns of energy have been experienced and scrutinised.

This is hardly a perfect science granted, but the more you delve into the simplicity of this, the more it makes sense. And believe me, as a writer who can get lost in the minutiae; I continually seek within myself and others the most direct path to the light that knowledge brings. Or so I tell myself anyway, but see for yourself if this rings any true.

1) Passive Positive Energy

For most of us, passive positive and passive negative act as the background energies to our lives. This might be optimal depending on where and who you are. An example could be trying to change your health regime. No one will tell you to stop on a dime and change your diet right away or go run that marathon.

Changes like that take time, and most of the strategies out there will plan around a piecemeal approach; some suggesting to do so more quickly or slowly. However, as you go down this road, you’re working towards a positive goal, embracing these positive energies passively.

Drinking less soda or eating less processed foods, parking further away from your destination so you have to walk more; these all could be passive approaches to actively changing your diet and life. But to know that you’re on a road towards a positive direction could be a great way to feel motivated.

2) Active Negative Energy

You don’t need to turn on the local or even national news, search on Google or check out a magazine in the store to see that the world is a bit chaotic. A lot of people for a lot of reasons are swimming within the active negative pool, and that bad energy seems to never go away completely.

At the micro level you could find yourself having been passed over for a promotion at work, or find out a loved one is sick with something serious. When these examples happen, it’s hard to remain upbeat or focused on the good, because the negative energy is so strong at that moment. The hope is that it ends quickly though, and you realize that there is breathing room on the other side of this energy.

3) Passive Negative Energy

Easier to deal with than the active one but still negative, this energy can be longer in nature and more looming. This can manifest itself at any age for any number of reasons. Whether you’re a child who doesn’t want to go to school because of being separated from home, or an elderly individual who is on the medical merry-go-round, this can be the hardest to detach from because it’s not pervasive but it’s always present.

Ironically, the light at the end of this tunnel can seem further out than with the active negative because again, it’s passive, it’s everywhere. So just like the piecemeal approach mentioned above, if you’re not able to take much of the negative energy out of these experiences, change the game and add some positive instead. Use that defiance as a motivation to level the playing field with a far better energy.

4) Active Positive Energy

It’s beautiful, it’s sublime, it’s just plain awesome! You find your soul-mate when you least expect, meet a new friend at school, or get that promotion at work. That novel you’ve been working on is now finished, you’ve been a non-smoker for a full week, or you just got to the gym and there’s hardly anyone there!

Active positive is the most fun to go on about, for obvious reasons. And it’s so versatile in nature. First it can help you get through active negative quicker with a better spirit. It can make passive negative not seem so endless. And passive positive can very easily upgrade onto this wonderful energy when you finally meet your goals.

It also helps make life so amazing and creative! It’s often said that a lot of pain goes into an artist’s work; yet even then it can manifest in the most breathtaking painting or gripping novella. Just the same, a lot of love can go into these creations as well, making the end product just as stunning.

In The End:

Ironically, thanks to the Winter Olympics in February, a quote by Lindsey Vonn came across my radar; “It’s amazing. Life changes very quickly, in a very positive way, if you let it.”

Related to these four energies, it’s easier to let in the opportunities that represent positives than the negatives. And it’s by no accident that 1 and 4 have more content than the others. Remember that part about being an eternal optimist? If destiny has led you here now, on the Peace Revolution blog, the hope is – you can relate, and if not, – may you have the internal light of knowledge that can help you guide away from the negatives, and towards the positives.
